Move-In Cost Calculator

Estimate upfront cash.

Estimated result—

Change the example inputs to your own values. Check the method and limitations below.

How to use this calculator

Enter First rent ($), Security deposit ($), Fees ($), Other setup costs ($). The result updates in your browser as you edit an input. The prefilled values are examples only.

How the estimate works

Add all four cost categories. Enter zero for any cost that does not apply.

What can change the answer?

First rent, deposits, application or other fees, and utility setup can be due at different times. A refundable deposit still affects upfront cash. Existing-lease overlap, pet charges or other costs may require another recorded amount. Confirm each payment and due date rather than assuming it is included.

Before relying on the result

Check which rent period, deposit, fees and setup payments are actually due before or at move-in. Record each due date and whether an amount is refundable. Keep moving transport costs on a separate list, and do not count both a full first month and a partial payment for the same rent period.

Worked example with the default inputs

First rent of $1,800, a $1,800 deposit, $100 in fees and $200 of setup costs require $3,900 upfront. A refundable deposit still requires cash at move-in even though its long-term treatment differs from a fee.

Interpret the result in a planning record

Use the move-in cost calculator for first rent, the security deposit, fees and other setup costs. These inputs describe upfront cash rather than a recurring monthly budget. Check which amounts are due before keys are released and which can wait. Keep refundable deposits visible even though they may eventually be returned.

Save the input values, units and result together. Change one uncertain input at a time so you can see which assumption moves the answer. A displayed decimal is arithmetic precision, rather than evidence that the measurements or rates are equally precise.
